Coaching Tips
- Track the ball closely and stay on the balls of feet to be able to adjust positioning and timing.
- Maintain a relaxed grip and try to absorb the ball’s impact for better control.
- Focus on a short, compact swing, hitting the ball at waist to chest height and follow through the swing towards the target area.
- Keep the racket face open for more lift and control.
- Avoid hitting too hard, give the player opposite time to react and control the ball.
Make it easier
- Allow players a bounce between shots rather than volleying.
Make it harder
- Add in a challenge, such as making 10 shots in a row.
- Add in a condition of only forehand or backhand volleys (for one or both players).
- Place two cones about a meter either side of the players and ask them to side step shuffle between cones whilst still hitting to each other.
- Get players to volley in pairs against a wall.
Safety
Remember, you can use the STEP framework – Space, Time, Equipment, and People – to adapt any activity, making it easier or more challenging to suit your players.
Always check that there’s enough space for everyone to take part safely, and make sure all under-18s are wearing protective goggles during the session.
