Coaching Tips

  • Keep the grip soft (not too tight).
  • When catching, drop and slightly soften the knees and racket face.
  • Maintain a soft wrist and elbow to cushion and absorb the ball’s impact.

Make it easier

  • Allow the ball to bounce on the racket before bringing it under control.

Make it harder

  • Stand further back or hit the ball harder at yourself.
  • Volley cross-court to yourself from forehand to backhand catch or vice versa.
  • Progress to doing it with a partner feeding off the wall.

Safety

Remember, use the STEP framework—Space, Time, Equipment, and People—to adapt any activity for your players.

Always ensure there’s enough space to participate safely, and that any under-18s wear protective goggles.
