Activity 25:
Floor target practice
Activity summary
Players test their accuracy and control by aiming to hit a target on the floor. Working in pairs, they take turns attempting to land the ball on the target placed between them, improving their precision and shot placement.
Activity setup
- This activity is done in pairs, each with a racket, and one ball shared between them.
- Players stand facing one another about 3 m apart, with a flat marker on the floor midway between them.

What to do:
- One player drops the ball and taps it up so it lands on the flat marker.
- After the shot bounces, the hitter moves back about 1 m to recover.
- Then the partner repeats the drop-and-hit sequence.
- Continue rallying and count each successful landing on the marker.

Coaching Tips
- Keep a steady grip and control your racket face to direct the ball straight up to the marker.
- Move into an optimal lunge position with core engaged for balance.
- Ensure a smooth, controlled follow-through for consistency and allow your partner time to recover.
- Adjust shot based on ball trajectory to improve accuracy over successive attempts.
Make it easier
- Play a cooperative rally allowing one bounce before the hit, without needing to land on the marker.
Make it harder
- Make it a competition: first pair to hit the marker 10 times wins.
Safety
Remember, you can use the STEP framework—Space, Time, Equipment, and People—to adapt any activity, making it easier or more challenging to suit your players.
Always check there’s enough space for everyone to participate safely, and ensure any under-18s are wearing protective goggles.
